Spotlight on a solicitor
We catch up with Rachel Ellison from BTMK Solicitors, to find out about Ibiza and Stand Up Paddle boarding.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a fighter pilot in the RAF, especially when my dad arranged for me to have a flight in a training jet! Then I realised I would have to do as I was told ALL the time! I still hope to get my private pilot’s licence one day!
What attracted you to conveyancing?
I can’t say that I was attracted to a conveyancing career at first but, having carried out this work for some years, it is very interesting. I enjoy overcoming title problems and getting a good result for my clients.
What is the high point of your career so far?
Qualifying as a Chartered Legal Executive in January was quite a high! I also had conduct of a trial at the Royal Courts of Justice a few years ago, which was incredibly exciting.
And the low point?
Realising that, no matter what you do, you can’t please everybody all of the time!
Who do you most admire within the law industry?
I follow the Secret Barrister on Twitter, but I most admire my friend who I met at University and who is now a Partner heading up counter-fraud at DAC Beachcroft in Birmingham.
And who do you admire outside of law?
Anyone who speaks their mind!
If there was one thing you could change about conveyancing, what would it be?
I would try to ensure that people see beyond the sometimes trivial “are they leaving the curtains and curtain poles” questions and concentrate on the legal issues. And see that us lawyers work very hard at very reasonable prices compared to the estate agents!
What’s your favourite holiday destination?
IBIZA!!! We have a place there and it’s great for both partying all night and relaxed family holidays!
Finally, what’s your favourite hobby and why should we all give it a go?
I love reading, but my next favourite hobby is Stand Up Paddle boarding; we took our board to Ibiza last year and it’s a great way to unwind and get a little core exercise!
