Getting to grips with the IDD
The uncertainties surrounding the Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) continue to rumble on and, even after five years, we regularly hear feedback which suggests that there are still some conflicting interpretations.
One of the main questions we are faced with is around whether or not you need to get multiple quotes when obtaining legal indemnity insurance. The simple answer is, you don’t.
The main emphasis of the Directive is actually quite simple; to ensure customers are better informed about the policy they’re buying, rather than simply focusing on price. The IDD makes no explicit mention of any requirement to obtain multiple quotes. The SRA’s guidance for firms arranging legal indemnity cover simply highlights that they should review their insurance provider(s) periodically to ensure they’re still suitable for their target market.
